Chelsie Broussard, or the Native Flora, as she's listed as her social media moniker, hasn't always been the beauty icon and mogul in the making as she is today. She says it wasn't until her high school years that she began putting a large emphasis on the way she styled her hair and began making sure her makeup was up to par. Chelsie said that during this time, she wouldn't even go to track meets or ball games without making sure she was dressed to the nines and her makeup was applied by movie star standards. This eventually garnered her the nickname "Hollywood" by her fellow classmates and friends.
Chelsie has since made quite a name for herself on social media displaying her numerous talents regarding all things beauty and fashion. Taking a virtual tour of her Instagram page could leave you a bit more sure of make-up and you may even leave with your mind a bit clearer as she often drops bits of knowledge here and there. The hairstylist is extremely conscious about nature and she shares tips about eating healthy as well.
Chelsie says that when she was a youth, her time was spent divided into two different households, one with her stepdad, mom, and sister in a house right on the bayou. A Louisiana native, she would typically spend most of her time outside exploring and being an absolute tomboy. She was also into sports at an early age, mostly basketball. At the time, her only aspiration was to help people and animals. Chelsie says that she found pure bliss in making people feel good about themselves.
These same desires and hopes helped to mold her into her current career of being a beautician and beauty blogger. She says that even in high school, she was practicing her beautician skills on fellow classmates by braiding their hair during P.E. or whenever there was leisure time in other classes. Chelsie says that most of her everything she's learned, she's learned through trial and error on her own and through watching YouTube videos. She’s been a licensed beautician since 2019. Chelsie says that she attended the Aveda Institute of Lafayette and she's very thankful that she did. The Institute taught her all about the importance of professionalism and being business savvy.
The stylist says she enjoys doing hair because making people feel better about themselves is a huge blessing that she's thankful for. Chelsie also says she takes great pleasure in being able to lend a listening ear to clients who sometimes need more than a new hairdo as some need to vent about difficult issues they are facing. She also spends a great amount creating content for her beauty blogs. When asked where she gets the ideas for her content, Chelsie says that her ideas come from a variety of places. Oftentimes, her looks come from ideas on Pinterest and she also surfs Tiktok to find inspiration from time to time. She admits that though certain looks can take an extreme amount of time and still not render as many likes, views, or shares as one would like, you cannot let that be your endpoint. Chelsie says that if anything when these things occur, you must be motivated and encouraged to continue to creatively expand your talents in a way that people will take notice of, and eventually you will get your desired result.
The content creator agrees there are, of course, ups and downs to being a blogger and a beautician. One particular one, she says is when clients treat you as if you are their personal maid or a servant. Another downer is sometimes receiving negative feedback. Chelsie adds that a low in blogging is definitely feeling like your content isn't getting the love you feel it deserves. These things happen she says but highs often occur as well. One example in blogging is when someone messages her and tells her that she has helped them through something. She says it also makes her feel so proud when someone shares her work on their page or reposts it in their Insta stories. These responses make her feel like she's doing what she's supposed to do.
The Native Flora is also a mother of two and when asked how she juggles two jobs/careers, she first admits that it's crazy to even think that at one time she never thought she'd have kids. Now that she has two, she's grateful that they have molded her into who she is today and feels super blessed for the purpose they've brought into her life. As for managing motherhood with her jobs, she says simply just does. Chelsie believes most mothers just adjust to the lifestyle of making things work as they tend to their children and that she's no different. However, she confesses that often mothers don't have the luxury of not making things work as their expected to do what they can by any means necessary. She credits her own sister to being a testament to the strength of great mothers as she says her sister is a great example of never letting anything stop her from defeating all odds and being a great mother to her own four children. Chelsie adds that seeing this inspires her greatly.
She shares these tips with people who want to pursue a similar career, “As long as you're persistent, you will succeed.” The beauty entrepreneur goes on to say, “Every successful person will tell you that they've been turned down or felt like they were not where they were supposed to be, but it was their determination to keep evolving, so stay persistent and consistent!”
