Last night SwagHer Magazine hosted Her Money Matters, a virtual series of financial panels led by Black women experts to help other Black women get their personal and business affairs in order. We’re taking control of our finances in 2022!

I was inspired to produce Her Money Matters after speaking with my accountant at the top of the year and realizing 2021 was our most profitable year as a business but there was a lot that I realized I did not know and could have done differently. I thought that other Black women may have had a really successful year as well and may also be in the same situation seeking better financial practices and answers.
However, I must admit I was a little nervous because we don’t usually host events, and though this one was virtual on Airmeet, Airmeet is a new platform for us to utilize, and it’s a little more advanced, but the SwagHer team and I pulled it off!

The first panel was personal finance, which focused on personal finances like budgeting, debt and loans, and improving our personal credit scores. The panelists included the following ladies:
Latoya Whitfield (A Queenpreneurs Plan)
Meeka Clay (M. Clay Enterprises)
Janeé Nguyen (Financial Healing for Women)
Rachel Hanible (Missing Peace Financial Group)
All the panelists agreed that it is very beneficial to automate your monthly bill payments, as Latoya shared.
They also concurred that we all have times when we may fall on hard times, so we may have to take out a loan but always have a plan to pay that money back and get on more solid footing, as Meeka pointed out, “because it’s not about how much money you make but how you spend it”.
Rachael explained that good debt is anything that continues to bring you money like an asset.
Janeé shared that if she could go back in time and tell her younger self anything, she would tell herself to manage her student loans and school refunds better.

The second panel was the business/professional finance panel, where we focused on finances from a business perspective. The panelists included the following ladies:
Juneil Bettis (Bettis Financial)
Folasade Ayegbusi (The Accountability Accountant)
Melika Honore (Honore Credit)
Annette Morris (Goal Getter LLC)
Terra Fontenot (Fontenot Solutions)
Both Terra and Folasade agreed that the best time to hire an accountant is before you start your business after distinguishing the differences between a bookkeeper and an accountant.
Annette, who teaches entrepreneurs how to increase their income streams, pointed out that we don’t always have to start another business to have multiple streams but can instead just add another line to our business. Her motto is “one vision, one business, and multiple streams”.
Juniel shared product and service ideas we could incorporate into our businesses like digital products, online courses, physical products, affiliate marketing, memberships, subscriptions, and loyalty programs.
As business credit is a hot topic right now, Melika explained how to work your way through the business credit tiers, but she also pointed out being an affiliate to some of the service providers we use in our business is one of the easiest ways to do nothing and make money.
Some business owners were curious about accepting cryptocurrency in their business and Folasade shared input on that, and she and Terra both agreed it’s important to do your research and have your financials organized before stepping into this unknown territory.
SwagHer client and CEO of Power Influence Radio, Lady Tiffany Nicole Feagins, was the moderator for the evening and did a great job keeping the conversation flowing and the guests entertained.
Thank you to our sponsors for helping make this event a success, Zhi Bath & Body, Mo the LMO, and Theories and Thoughts Podcast.
And a very special thank you to SwagHer's core team (Angelica Williams, Jarmel Roberson, Briana Brown, and Porsche Gregory) and the SwagHer Committee (Kim Dawn, Jasmyne Seed, Jasmine Spencer, Chandra Gore, and Janet Downs) for all their hard work.
