Always having a passion for reading, Ciara Horton-Stevenson created She Is E Magazine in 2016. Her creation was something that God gave her, and she took it and ran. Watching her mother and other female family members in their journeys to become great entrepreneurs, she knew she had to share their stories.
4 years later, she’s featured countless women and celebrity women in business. She now is creator of He Is E Magazine as well. Now coaching other creatives to launch their own magazines and books, Ciara’s passion is to see everyone win. In her free time, she enjoys being a wife, mother, and creating since that’s what she’s called to do.
Fancy: While you probably wanted to share the stories of your family members’ entrepreneurial journey for some time, what was that moment like when you decided to move forward?
Ciara: It was a moment of truth when moving forward. Yes my family members have great stories to share, but realistically that’s not my tribe. I had to get real about who really supported me, and needed to reach beyond my family for support. Not to discredit my family, but sometimes they are last to support you. In order for my business to blossom, I needed more than just them. Even thought a lot of them still support me. I know my obligation is to my tribe.
Fancy: How would you describe the ideal 'she is woman' and 'he is man'?
Ciara: The ideal 'she is woman' would be a woman that is actively in leadership or entrepreneurship, and is open to sharing their losses, lessons and success. It’s the same for the 'he is man.' We need to see more men being transparent and allow them that space.
Fancy: What do you enjoy most about your work?
Ciara: I enjoy being able to ask questions that most people won’t ask. It’s more of an unmasking. I love being THAT person.
Fancy: Why do you find it important to share the stories of women?
Ciara: Women have been silenced for so long, especially women of color. Now we have voices, and are afforded the opportunities that we never had. This is why it’s important to create a platform for sharing these stories. I just want to give a voice to the voiceless.
Fancy: What is one challenge you had to overcome, whether personally or professionally, to further grow your business and how did you do so?
Ciara: When I started, I knew I wanted to share stories but actually niching down was a challenge. I wanted to share these stories, but being able to get down to that archetype was very challenging. So I began to seek out trainings, and have since then hired a coach. It’s very enlightening and helpful.
Fancy: How would you describe your swagher? What makes Ciara, Ciara?
Ciara: What makes me, ME? I would say my level of dedication to others. I’m heavy on being humble and loyal. This is from my marriage to my relationships. In these days and times that’s rare. I plan on keeping it that way because that helps me be, ME.
Fancy: What does it mean to you to be a Black woman in business?
Ciara: It means I’m able to do what my ancestors wanted me to do regardless of how hard it has been and will be. It’s definitely my wildest dreams!
